Room 16’s Water Safety Lesson

Written by Room 16

Last week Room 16 went to the Parnell Baths for our second Water Safety lesson to learn how to be safe in and around water.

We sat on the wall while listening to the instructors telling us different ways to save people who are in trouble in the water. These rescue methods include using ropes, noodles, empty milk bottles and life jackets.

First we learnt how to save our buddies with the noodles. When we reached out our noodles, we needed to remember to lie on our tummies so we won't get dragged into the water. We also needed to tell the people who we were saving our names so they knew who was saving them.

Secondly, we learnt how to use empty milk bottles to save lives. The empty milk bottles can float really well and people could hug the bottles while they swam back. We needed to remember to float on our backs to help us breathe.

Next we learnt how to use life jackets. We needed to slip the life jackets on and secure them by zipping and clipping. We also had to make sure the life jackets were tight enough. Then we practised how to float on our backs in our life jackets doing a star fish pose.

After all these practices in the small pool, we went to the big pool. It was deep and cold. We had to jump in, holding our life jackets and nose. We huddled in the water to keep safe and warm.

At the end of the lesson we made a floating train by holding onto each other's life jacket. The person at the very end needed to kick while the instructor pulled the front of the train along. It was a lot of fun!

This Water Safety lesson was exciting and educational. Next time when we go out on the boat, we sure will know what to do to keep safe!
