Author Visit and Back in the 1800s

Diana Harris visited the Year 3s and 4 s this morning! Diana is a passionate New Zealand writer who has a special interest in New Zealand history and the Maori language. She  spoke to us today about her life as an author and how she enjoyed sharing her ideas in words with others.

Diana said to be a good writer, you need to read lots of books to learn new words and get inspired by other people's writing. She suggested us reading our writings aloud after writing to help us edit our works. Diana also read us her book called 'Guardian of the Bridge' which told the tale of how the taniwha became the guardian of Auckland's Harbour Bridge. We enjoyed meeting Diana!

After lunch, Ms Lin took us back in time to experience schooling in the 1800s. We had to get our nails checked and sat in rows. We practised handwriting on the slates and played olden day games like 'Jack Straws' and dominoes. Ms Lin addressed all of us by our surnames and we had to recite poems and nursery rhymes to each other.

It was another fun day!
