The Project:
We are to make a structure at home with some or all of the equipment listed below that will be a platform on which
the weight of one full of water 2 litre plastic milk bottle will be placed (
which equals 2 kg) supported 5-10
centimetres off the table without it
collapsing. The picture of the tetrahedron shape on the back of this sheet is
to remind them of ideas discussed and demonstrated in the classroom about the
strength and rigidity of the triangle as a basic supporting shape to base their
structure on.
Equipment
12 Plastic drinking straws,
1 metre of cellotape or masking tape.
1 of the 3 strips
found in a fresh packet of Blutac,
1 empty clean 2 litre plastic milk bottle cut up so as to
provide sheets of plastic of various sizes.
The structures are not to be brought to school until Friday
May 25 where each will be tested to see if they meet the specifications and
equipment limitations outlined above and
does indeed support 2 kg of weight in
the form of a full of water2L plastic milk bottle. The equipment allowed does
not all have to be used but no more than the total equipment will be allowed.
I decided to work with Sabre on the project so she came to my house on Saturday. When it was done we put a 2L milk bottle on top and it worked! YAY!
